What are the dog rules on beaches?
Beach rules for dogs vary by council, by season, and by section of sand. Many popular UK beaches introduce dog bans from May to September on the busiest family sections, typically between 10am and 6pm. In the US, rules are set at the local authority level and range from year-round bans to full off-lead access. The specific rule for a specific beach on a specific date is almost never posted clearly at the car park. Check before you go.
UK seasonal bans
Most UK local councils manage beach dog access seasonally. The standard summer restriction runs from May 1 to September 30 on designated bathing beaches, with dogs prohibited between 10am and 6pm during those months. The restriction applies to specific zones marked on the council's beach map, and other sections of the same beach may remain open to dogs year-round. Outside of restricted zones and hours, dogs are usually welcome. The problem is that the signage at the beach itself is often inadequate, and the council's website is the reliable source.
Year-round dog-friendly beaches in the UK
Many beaches in the UK have no seasonal restrictions at all, typically those without Blue Flag bathing designation or those managed by local councils that have not imposed restrictions. Some of the best dog beaches in the UK are year-round: long stretches of sand on the North Norfolk coast, parts of the Gower Peninsula, Holkham, Bamburgh, and long sections of the Northumberland coast. These tend to be quieter, more scenic, and significantly better for a dog than restricted family beaches in season.
US beach rules
In the US, beach dog rules are set by the local municipality, county, or state park authority that manages the beach. The variation is extreme. Some California beaches ban dogs entirely; others have designated off-lead areas. New York and New Jersey beaches vary block by block in some areas. Florida beach rules differ by county and town. National park beaches have their own rules, and state park beaches follow state regulations. The only reliable source is the specific managing authority for the specific beach.
How to check before you go
In the UK, search the name of the beach plus dog rules or the relevant local council website. The council publishes seasonal beach maps showing which sections are restricted. In the US, search the beach name plus dogs or pets and look for the managing authority website rather than third-party travel guides, which are often out of date.
